Passphrase. 25 word seed phrase.

Passphrase 25 word seed phrase.

Passphrase is an advanced security feature that can be used in hardware wallets like Ledger Nano X or Ledger Nano S Plus. It adds an additional word of your choice to an existing recovery phrase. This allows you to unlock a completely different set of accounts.

As you probably already known your recovery phrase of 24 worlds is a backup of all your crypto assets . Reliability is very important keep your 24 words and never enter them on a smartphone, computer or any other device that _ maybe connect to the internet. If someone succeeds get hold of your set of 24 words, they will be able steal all your cryptocurrencies, unless you use a Passphrase, the 25th word invented by you personally.

So how does it work and why is it needed?

wallet chip generates a seed phrase, which has its own separate setting. No matter how many accounts have been created, it is this seed that will open access to all of them. The added passphrase opens up a completely different setting that allows you to create new accounts as if you were using a new recovery phrase. Using a passphrase keeps your assets safe even after your 24 word seed phrase is compromised or stolen. You can keep a small amount of money on an account to which your seed of 24 words gives access, and tie all the main funds to the 25th word that you personally invented, and let it be a set of numbers and symbols that you will never forget. In this case, you need to store the Seed of 24 words in two different places, one, as an option, transfer to metal and bury deep in the area, and put the second in a safe.

For example, you find yourself in an unpleasant situation, robbers steal your seed or demand to give your money under threat of reprisal, you open a balance with 24 words or give them your words. Thus, a small part of your honestly earned tokens falls into their hands, and you open the entire main balance with your seed and passphrase.

  • All recovery phrases and passphrases generated by Ledger devices comply with the BIP39 standard.
  • With this in mind, you can enter a recovery phrase and a passphrase created by third-party hardware wallets like Trezor or ColdCard into the Ledger device.
  • The reverse is also relevant. You can securely use a recovery phrase from Ledger and recover passphrase-protected accounts on third-party BIP39-compliant hardware wallets.
  • it is extremely dangerous to import recovery phrases from software wallets like MetaMask into a Ledger device.

Setting

There are two settings for the Passphrase, one will give you access to the accounts you need after entering the PIN - CODE associated with it, the second setting involves entering the Passphrase every time you want to access the accounts attached to it.
